My Take
Jeff Richmond does the kind of invisible work I most respect. As the composer behind 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, he handles one of comedy's trickiest jobs: scoring that lifts the joke without ever stepping on it. The Ohio-born, Kent State-trained musician clearly understands that restraint is its own art form. It also fascinates me that he and Tina Fey built so much of this comedy together as a creative partnership; that domestic-and-professional synergy is rare and hard to fake. I'll always champion the backstage craftsmen, and Richmond is a quiet master of holding the laughs up from underneath.
