My Take

Defoe is the kind of striker I have always admired: an instinctive finisher forged in the academies of working-class London. Coming up through Charlton at 14 and West Ham at 16, he never relied on flair, just a poacher's nose for goal and a relentless will to score. The OBE tells you he carried himself with class off the pitch too. What fascinates me now is his move into management at Woking. Watching a man whose whole identity was scoring goals learn to teach others how to do it is, to me, the most compelling chapter of his story.
