Toshio Sakata

I have such a soft spot for this guy. Toshio Sakata was the little Osaka comedian everyone called "Aho no Sakata," the Idiot, and somehow that became the warmest nickname in showbiz. He'd tilt his head, flash that goofy grin, and a whole theater would just melt, no meanness anywhere in it. There's a real art to playing the fool with that much dignity, and at 159cm planted dead center on the Yoshimoto stage, he made it look effortless. Born in 1941 in Minato-ku, he stayed humble across decades as a true veteran, never putting on airs. When he passed at the end of 2023, you could feel Osaka collectively sigh. Making people laugh and leaving them smiling, that's about as good as a life gets, honestly.
