My Take

What I admire most about Jess Bush is her refusal to pick a single lane. Plenty of performers come out of reality television and stay in its orbit; she used a modeling competition as a doorway, built a serious practice as a visual artist, and then took on one of science fiction's most scrutinized legacy roles as Nurse Chapel in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Reinventing a character fans have guarded for half a century takes nerve and craft, and she made the part feel both faithful and entirely her own. To me she represents the modern multidisciplinary performer at her best, and I suspect her defining work is still ahead of her.
