Jessalyn Gilsig

Jessalyn Gilsig is one of those actors whose face triggers instant recognition even when the name takes a beat. A Montreal native and Harvard graduate, she wears her intelligence lightly, which I appreciate; her performances feel lived-in rather than showy. Across Heroes, Nip/Tuck, Glee, and Vikings she has slipped convincingly into wildly different tones and worlds, the mark of a genuine chameleon. Her share of a Screen Actors Guild ensemble award fits perfectly, since her real gift is breathing with a cast rather than dominating it. I have a deep fondness for this brand of generous, unshowy actor who quietly holds a production together.
