Jesse Malin

Jesse Malin is one of those artists who carries punk's raw urgency into mature, literate songwriting without losing either. From the New York hardcore of Heart Attack to fronting D Generation and then a substantial solo run, he has stayed restlessly true to the city that made him. I'm drawn to the Lucinda Williams-produced Sunset Kids, which shows how seriously he takes his craft. What I admire is the balance: streetwise grit alongside genuine lyrical warmth. Malin feels like a keeper of a certain downtown New York spirit, an authentic songwriter who never traded edge for polish.
