My Take
What I admire most about Jody Watley is her trajectory: a Soul Train dancer who became part of Shalamar and then reinvented herself as a solo artist sharp enough to win the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1988. Dancers who sing carry rhythm in their bodies, and you hear it in her phrasing. To me she always felt half a step ahead of trends rather than chasing them, which is exactly why her style aged so gracefully. I find her quietly inspiring.
