My Take
Joe Abercrombie is, for my money, the writer who rescued epic fantasy from its own solemnity. The First Law books take every heroic archetype and let it rot in the most entertaining way possible, yet underneath the cynicism there is genuine affection for his broken characters. I credit his background as a film editor: his battle scenes cut like montage, and he never lingers a sentence longer than the tension requires. The LordGrimdark handle is a joke, but an accurate one. Few authors balance brutality, wit, and structural discipline this well, and fewer still make me reread five-hundred-page novels purely for pleasure.

Joseph Edward Abercrombie (born December 31, 1974) is an English author of epic fantasy books and a film editor. He is the author of The First Law and The Age of Madness trilogies, as well as other fantasy books in the same setting, and a trilogy of young adult novels. His novel Half a King won the 2015 Locus Award for best young adult book.
