Joe Exotic

I've rarely encountered a figure where reality so thoroughly outpaces fiction as it does with Joe Exotic. Born in Garden City, Kansas, he ran a sprawling exotic animal park in Oklahoma before a poisonous feud spiraled into a national spectacle. His tangle of identities, self-styled police chief, zookeeper, country singer, makes him almost impossible to categorize as a person. I won't pretend to admire him; his story is reckless, garish, and often sad. Yet I can't look away. He stands as a strange testament to how outlandish a real human life can become, and that fascination is precisely what unsettles me.
