My Take

Joe Satriani thrills me as a player, but it's his teaching that floors me. Conveying that much emotion through instrumental guitar is rare, yet look at his alumni: Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett, Larry LaLonde, Alex Skolnick. A world-class virtuoso who also seeded a generation of legends is almost unheard of. I admire that he never just shows off; even his most technical work serves the song. The banjo and mandolin in his toolkit hint at a deeper musicianship beyond shred. To be both a master and a maker of masters is a beautiful double act, and Satriani earns my deep respect.
