Joey Arias

Joey Arias is the kind of artist who refuses to fit in a single box, and that is precisely why I admire him. A singer, cabaret performer, drag artist, author, comedian, and actor out of Fayetteville, North Carolina, he turned the whole question of what one should be into a performance of its own. Still active since the late 1940s generation, he carries the weight of New York's underground culture in everything he does. I am drawn to performers who treat their own identity as the canvas, and Arias does it with a fearlessness that feels genuinely singular rather than merely eccentric.
