Joey Crawford

Joey Crawford intrigues me because he was a referee with the presence of a star. Working NBA games from 1977 to 2016, wearing number 17, he became famous, and infamous, for handing out technical fouls to players and coaches alike. Most officials aim to disappear into the game, but Crawford was discussed like a main character. I actually respect that. An official willing to be disliked in order to enforce his own standard is, in a real sense, a guardian of the game's order. Lasting nearly four decades under that scrutiny takes a backbone most fans never appreciate.
