Joey Tempest

Joey Tempest wrote one of the most recognizable intros in rock history, and I can't help but envy that a little. Born in Stockholm, the frontman and chief songwriter of the band Europe penned The Final Countdown, a song so globally embedded that almost everyone knows those opening notes. As a singer-songwriter he's driven the band with a melodic, distinctly Scandinavian sense of hooks. People love to file him under one-hit wonder, but he's kept the band going and kept singing for decades, which takes real staying power. To write something that still makes a crowd erupt on the first chord is a songwriter's dream, and I admire the longevity behind it.
