My Take
John Carmack is one of the few engineers I'd genuinely call an artist. Co-founding id Software and writing the code behind Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake, he didn't just make games, he repeatedly redefined what hardware could do, right down to his Carmack's Reverse shadow algorithm. The BAFTA Fellowship and lifetime achievement honors feel almost understated for that impact. What I admire most is the obsessive, first-principles mindset that took him from a Kansas kid to graphics pioneer to aerospace and VR. He's proof that a single relentless programmer can shape an entire industry. Few technologists have left fingerprints this deep on a medium.
