My Take
John Paul Jones is my favorite argument that the least famous member of a band can be its most essential. Led Zeppelin's sound is usually credited to Page's riffs and Plant's wail, but listen closely and it is Jones, the bassist, keyboardist, and arranger, who keeps the chaos structurally sound. He arrived as a seasoned session musician, and that craftsman's discipline is audible in every track. I love that he never chased the spotlight, yet honors like the Kennedy Center Honors found him anyway. For me he is the patron saint of musicians who serve the song rather than the camera, and rock history owes him far more conversation than he gets.
