John Waite

John Waite deserves better than the one-hit-wonder shorthand. Yes, 1984's "Missing You" topped the Billboard Hot 100, and it remains a near-perfect ache of a song, but he also fronted the Babys and Bad English and has quietly stacked up ten solo albums. What draws me in is the grain of his voice, that weathered, slightly broken tone that makes heartbreak sound lived-in rather than performed. He never chased reinvention; he just kept singing. I respect longevity built on craft over spectacle, and Waite has had decades of exactly that.
