My Take

Johnny Gioeli has one of those voices that feels like pure Brooklyn grit set to electric guitar. Fronting Hardline, Crush 40 and Axel Rudi Pell's band, he kept melodic hard rock alive long after the genre slipped from fashion, and his work scoring the Sonic the Hedgehog games since 1998 is, to me, weirdly heroic. Writing soaring anthems for a video-game hedgehog and selling them completely takes real conviction. I respect singers who stay loyal to their sound instead of chasing trends, and Gioeli has done exactly that for decades. He's an unfashionable kind of great, and I love him for it.
