My Take

What strikes me about Jose de Paula is how far his journey carried him. Born in Villa Mella in Santo Domingo Province in 1988, he climbed the long way up from the Dominican Republic to the New York Yankees in Major League Baseball, then kept his career alive overseas as a pitcher for the CTBC Brothers in Taiwan's CPBL. I find that second act quietly admirable. Plenty of arms wash out once the MLB door closes, but he kept competing on a different continent. To me he reads as a working pitcher who chased the game wherever it would have him.
