Julee Cruise

What fascinates me about Julee Cruise is how she made an entire emotional climate out of one voice. Her work with David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti, especially Floating into the Night, isn't really pop and isn't really ambient; it's a kind of waking dream that few singers could inhabit so convincingly. I find her gift was restraint, the willingness to float rather than belt, letting silence and reverb do half the storytelling. She never chased mainstream fame, which makes her catalog feel oddly pure. Her passing in 2022 closed a singular chapter, but that dreamlike sound remains unmistakably hers.
