What fascinates me about Julee Cruise is how she made an entire emotional climate out of one voice. Her work with David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti, especially Floating into the Night, isn't really pop and isn't really ambient; it's a kind of waking dream that few singers could inhabit so convincingly. I find her gift was restraint, the willingness to float rather than belt, letting silence and reverb do half the storytelling.
