My Take
Katarina Witt is one of those athletes who made an entire sport feel glamorous and dangerous at the same time, and I mean that as the highest possible compliment. Competing for East Germany at a time when that carried enormous political weight, she won back-to-back Olympic gold medals in 1984 and 1988, a feat that almost nobody pulls off in figure skating. But raw results don't capture it — what she brought to the ice was a theatrical confidence that made every program feel like a statement. Her 1988 "Carmen" performance is still referenced as a gold standard of what artistic skating can be. She later turned professional, showed up in Hollywood films, and never really disappeared from public life. She's proof that genuine charisma doesn't expire when the competitive career does.
