My Take
What I admire most about Kathryn Stockett is her willingness to turn her own Mississippi upbringing into something honest rather than nostalgic. The Help could have been a comfortable period piece, but by giving voice to Black maids in 1960s Jackson she pointed the camera at a discomfort she knew firsthand. I also respect that the book reportedly faced dozens of rejections before becoming a phenomenon; that kind of stubborn faith in a story tells me a lot about her. She lets the writing speak and stays out of the spotlight, which only deepens my interest in her.
