My Take

Katy Manning will always be Jo Grant to me, the beloved Doctor Who companion she first played from 1971 to 1973. What I find remarkable is that in 2010 she returned to the role in The Sarah Jane Adventures, decades later. Being invited back to a part after that much time, and inhabiting it convincingly, says a great deal about how fully she fused with the character. Across stage, screen, and television presenting, the Guildford-born actress built a long and varied career, but I'm most charmed by how she carried one cherished role as a lifelong treasure. That's a kind of fortune few actors get.
