My Take
Kazuhiko Torishima is one of the most consequential people in modern manga who never drew a panel. Born in Ojiya, Niigata Prefecture in 1952 and educated at Keio University, he joined Shueisha as an editor in 1976 and spent his career on the other side of the desk from the artists, most famously as the editor who discovered Akira Toriyama. The role of a manga editor is poorly understood outside Japan. It is not copyediting. It is arguing with a young creator about what their work is actually about, and refusing pages until the thing on paper matches what the editor believes the artist can do. Torishima's reputation is built on saying no, repeatedly, and that reputation is often mistaken for cruelty. I read it differently: rejection at that intensity is a form of belief. You do not spend that energy on someone you have written off. He later moved into management at Shueisha, served as a publishing executive, and now sits as an outside director at Bushiroad. The interesting thread is that his authority never came from the title. It came from having been right about people before anyone else was.
