My Take

Art Spiegelman, to me, is the man who forced the wider culture to take comics seriously as literature. Maus, told through mice and cats to carry his father's Holocaust memory, became the first graphic work to win a Pulitzer Special Citation, and that was nothing short of a revolution. The Eisner, the Harvey, France's Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, his decade at The New Yorker, and his 9/11 book In the Shadow of No Towers all share one trait: an unflinching willingness to look pain in the eye. Born in Stockholm and raised in postwar America, he turned inherited trauma into form. As a comics lover, I hold nothing but reverence for him.

Itzhak Avraham ben Zeev Spiegelman ( SPEE-gəl-mən; born February 15, 1948), professionally known as Art Spiegelman, is a Polish-American cartoonist, editor, and comics advocate best known for his graphic novel Maus. His work as co-editor on the comics magazines Arcade and Raw has been influential, and from 1992 he spent a decade as contributing artist for The New Yorker.
