Kazuhisa Ishii

Kazuhisa Ishii's career keeps changing shape, and that is what makes him worth writing about. Out of Tokyo Gakkan Urayasu High School in Chiba, he pitched for the Yakult Swallows, crossed over to the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Mets, then came home and threw for the Saitama Seibu Lions. That alone is a full career. Instead he retired into the front office as a general manager, and later went down to the dugout to manage as well. Almost nobody does both. Executives and field men usually pick a side, each quietly convinced the other job is easier than it is. Doing both takes the same nerve he showed on the mound, where strikeouts and walks could pile up in the same inning. Uncomfortable to watch, and very hard to rattle.
