Ken'ichi Okamoto

Ken'ichi Okamoto, born in 1969 in the Shimo-Ochiai neighborhood of Tokyo, belongs to a category that Western readers may not immediately recognize: the Japanese idol who becomes a serious stage actor. It is a harder pivot than it sounds. Idol fame is loud, fast, and built on being seen; theatre is slow, unglamorous, and built on being trusted. Okamoto has ended up holding both the Kikuta Kazuo Drama Award and the Medal with Purple Ribbon, a state honour Japan gives for contributions to the arts and academia. That is not a popularity prize. He was a member of the idol group Otokogumi, now also plays in the rock band Rockon Social Club, and his son Keito Okamoto followed him into entertainment. Some performers explain themselves in interviews; others simply keep showing up in rehearsal rooms for decades and let the work make the argument. Okamoto looks squarely like the second kind, and the awards suggest the argument landed.
