My Take
Lonergan is, to me, one of the most trustworthy writers working in either theatre or film. What I admire is his refusal to flinch from the messiest interior territory: grief, family resentment, feelings that resist tidy resolution. He never over-explains, yet never looks away either. The hardware backs it up, from a Sundance Grand Jury Prize to an Academy Award and nominations spanning the Pulitzer and the Tony. But the awards aren't the point. The point is that he earns his emotion through quiet, accumulating conversation rather than manipulation, and that patience is exactly why his work lingers.
