My Take
Kevin Eastman is, to me, a genuine outsider success story in comics. Together with Peter Laird he created the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which began as a scrappy, self-published parody and somehow grew into a global phenomenon, the kind of long shot that rarely lands. His Inkpot Award and Eisner Hall of Fame induction confirm the respect of his peers, while his run editing and publishing Heavy Metal shows an appetite far beyond one hit. What I admire most is that he never coasted, expanding into publishing and producing. Four turtles reshaping pop culture is a wild, wonderful legacy.
