My Take
Kirby Puckett moves me because of his loyalty as much as his talent. He spent all twelve of his Major League seasons with the Minnesota Twins, carrying them to championships in 1987 and 1991 in an era when players often chased the next contract. There's something deeply human about a man from Chicago's South Side who became the heartbeat of one city. A Gold Glove center fielder with a barrel of a body and surprising grace, he made the game look joyful. His death at forty-six in 2006 still feels like a theft. To me he represents devotion rewarded with adoration.
