Kouya Fujii

Kōya Fujii, born July 29, 1996, is a right-handed pitcher, 182 cm, currently with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks after earlier years in the Hiroshima Toyo Carp organization. Written out like that, it reads as an ordinary transfer between clubs. It wasn't. Fujii is one of those pitchers who fell out of professional baseball entirely and had to climb back in from outside the system. That second climb is the part I find genuinely hard to imagine. Getting drafted is a story of momentum: you're young, someone believes in you, the infrastructure is handed to you. Coming back after being cut is the opposite of momentum. You're older, the facilities are worse, nobody is obligated to watch you throw, and every month that passes makes the case against you stronger. Most players in that position quietly stop. So when I see Fujii working an inning at the top level, the fastball and the breaking stuff are almost beside the point. The interesting statistic is that he's standing there at all.
