Kurochan is hard to explain to anyone who has never watched Japanese variety television, but let me try. He is a comedian from Higashihiroshima in Hiroshima Prefecture, a graduate of Hanazono University, and one third of the trio Yasuda Dai Circus. He is also, by design, the person everybody in the room is permitted to be annoyed at. He gets caught, gets shouted at, gets humiliated for the cameras, and shows up again the following week. The economics of that role are brutal and rarely discussed. The more the audience dislikes you, the better the numbers, which means the incentive always points further out, and there is no obvious exit. Kurochan has been standing in that spot for a very long time. What I find genuinely impressive is that after all these years nobody can say where the calculation ends and the man starts. That ambiguity is not a flaw in the act. It is the act.
