Kurochan

Kurochan is hard to explain to anyone who has never watched Japanese variety television, but let me try. He is a comedian from Higashihiroshima in Hiroshima Prefecture, who attended Hanazono University without graduating, and one third of the trio Yasuda Dai Circus. He is also, by design, the person everybody in the room is permitted to be annoyed at. The voice arrives first: unnaturally high, wheedling, pitched somewhere in a child's register, and he never lets it drop. Then the persona - vain, self-pitying, perpetually caught in some small transparent lie, and entirely unrepentant about it. I did not like it at first. I am no longer sure liking was ever the point. What changed my mind was durability. Anybody can be irritating for one broadcast. Doing it for years on national television, while production teams build whole programs around exposing you - surveillance-style formats whose premise is essentially "let us show the country what this man is really like" - takes a kind of nerve I am not certain I have. He gets caught, gets shouted at, gets humiliated for the cameras, and shows up again the following week. The economics of that role are brutal and rarely discussed. The more the audience dislikes you, the better the numbers, which means the incentive always points further out, and there is no obvious exit. Kurochan has been standing in that spot for a very long time. What I find genuinely impressive is that after all these years nobody can say where the calculation ends and the man starts. That ambiguity is not a flaw in the act. It is the act.
