Kyōzō Nagatsuka

With Nagatsuka, I always come back to the voice. Low, dry, unhurried, it can cool an entire scene without ever rising in volume. Born in Setagaya, Tokyo, in 1945 and standing 181 cm, he reportedly found his way into acting during a stretch in France rather than through the usual domestic route, and that unusual entry explains something about how he carries himself. He never looks like he is performing for the room. He is not the actor who wins a film by dominating it; he is the father, the executive, the man whose disapproval actually lands, and the scene reorganises itself around his stillness. Watching him is a lesson in how much authority lives inside restraint. Now past eighty, he belongs to a small group of actors you can recall by sound alone, which is rarer than being recognisable by face.
