My Take
Lars Nootbaar holds a special place for me. Raised in El Segundo and developed at USC before reaching the Cardinals, he became a bridge between two baseball cultures when he joined Japan's national team through his Japanese mother. What I loved most was the joy he radiated at the World Baseball Classic, turning the pepper-grinder celebration into a national inside joke that made Japan fall for him. He plays with total effort, diving and grinding on both sides of the ball, yet always seems to be having fun. That mix of heart and delight is exactly the kind of athlete I cheer for.
