My Take
LaSalle Ishii has a name that confuses you until you hear the story: he took it from the elite boarding school he attended in Kagoshima, though he was born in Osaka's Sumiyoshi ward in 1955. Turning your alma mater into your stage name is a joke with real nerve behind it. From Waseda he went into comedy with the trio Konto Akashingo, then into voice acting, drama roles, and stage direction. What I admire is that at seventy he has not sanded himself down. He still says the thing most people in his position swallow. Agree with him or not, that is a rare kind of stamina.
