My Take
What I admire most about Lee Daniels is his refusal to flinch. From Precious to The Butler to The United States vs. Billie Holiday, he hands the center of the frame to people cinema usually pushes to the margins, and he does it with a strange, aching warmth rather than misery for its own sake. The Sundance prize, the directing nominations, the Walk of Fame star all confirm what the work already shows: a Philadelphia kid with an unmistakable voice. I find his films emotionally messy in the best way, and I trust a filmmaker who is that honest about pain.
