Lee Myung-hee

Lee Myung-hee fascinates me as a study in quiet power. The youngest daughter of Samsung's founder, she could have coasted on the family name, yet after Shinsegae split from Samsung she grew it into Korea's second-largest retailer on her own merit. That distinction matters: inheriting a position is one thing, building it is another. An Ewha Womans University graduate who became chairwoman in 1997, she shaped the country's retail landscape from behind the scenes. I picture her as a leader of understated force, the kind who moves vast organizations without ever needing the spotlight.
