My Take

Leroy Burrell had the misfortune and the privilege of running in the same era and the same club as Carl Lewis, which means he's often remembered as the other guy, but he twice held the 100 metres world record, which is no footnote. I always thought he was a beautifully smooth sprinter, and the internal rivalry with Lewis pushed both of them to faster times. His move into coaching at Houston, where he built his own career, shows real staying power. An underrated great who deserves more than to be Lewis's sidekick in the record books.

A teammate and rival of Carl Lewis at the University of Houston and the Santa Monica Track Club, he won Olympic gold as part of the 4x100 metres relay team at the 1992 Barcelona Games. After retiring, he became the head track and field coach at the University of Houston.
