Lisa Monaco

What strikes me about Lisa Monaco is how completely her public service eclipses her public persona. A Harvard-trained Boston native who rose from Obama's homeland security advisor to the 39th deputy attorney general, she operated at the most fraught intersection of law and national security. In an era of self-promotion, here is someone whose authority comes from competence and discretion, not visibility. To me she represents a quieter kind of power, the institutional spine that holds a country steady behind the scenes.
