Lise Mayer

Lise Mayer fascinates me precisely because she worked behind the curtain. As the American-born creator and co-writer of The Young Ones, she helped detonate something anarchic in British comedy without ever needing the spotlight herself. I find that quietly admirable. Writers rarely get the credit performers do, yet the architecture of a show's humor is where its soul actually lives. Growing up in Manchester, where her father taught at the university, she met Rik Mayall there and went on to co-create a landmark series with him. She is, to me, the kind of unsung talent worth celebrating loudly.
