My Take
Little Richard is, to me, the literal ignition point of rock and roll. When a man from Macon, Georgia hammered a piano and let loose that scream, popular music did not just gain a new star, it changed shape. "Long Tall Sally" and "Lucille" still detonate on impact decades later, and nearly everyone who followed borrowed from his excess, his flamboyance, his sheer voltage. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and his Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award only confirm what the records already prove. That he also lived as a preacher adds a contradiction I find fascinating rather than confusing. Seven decades of fire.
