My Take
Liz Cheney is one of those rare politicians who genuinely surprised everyone, including herself, I think. She came up as a rock-solid conservative and Dick Cheney's daughter — you'd expect a party loyalist through and through — but when January 6th happened, she did something almost no one in her caucus was willing to do: she stood her ground and called it exactly what it was. She voted to impeach Trump, got stripped of her House Republican Conference chairmanship for it, and then lost her Wyoming seat in a landslide primary. Most people would call that political suicide. I call it backbone. The John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award she received in 2022 felt genuinely earned, not ceremonial.
