My Take
Mac Miller is one of those artists who just gets more impressive the further you get from his passing. A Pittsburgh kid who picked up a mic at 15, taught himself production, and somehow managed to keep growing as an artist right up until the end — that's not a small thing. His early mixtapes like K.I.D.S. had this infectious, sunny energy, but what I love is that he refused to stay there. Swimming, released just weeks before he died in September 2018, is genuinely one of the most vulnerable and beautifully crafted rap albums of that decade. He was only 26. I think about the albums he didn't get to make and it genuinely stings. He left behind a catalog that rewards repeated listening, and that feels like the realest legacy there is.
