My Take

Madeline Miller is, for me, proof that the classics still pulse with life when handled by the right hands. Spending ten years writing The Song of Achilles while teaching Latin and Greek shows a devotion I find deeply moving, and the result, a tender reimagining of Achilles and Patroclus, earned the Orange Prize for good reason. With Circe she went further, giving an overlooked mythological woman her own voice. What I admire is her ability to make ancient figures feel emotionally immediate. She is exactly the writer I would hand to anyone convinced that old myths must be dull.
