My Take
Mahesh Narayanan is one of the most quietly exciting filmmakers working in Indian cinema today. Having sharpened his instincts as a film editor before stepping into directing, he carries a rhythmic precision that many directors never develop. His work in Malayalam cinema, with forays into Tamil and Hindi, shows a craftsman who builds tension through structure rather than spectacle. Winning Kerala State Film Awards for both Best Debut Director and Best Director confirms he is no flash in the pan. I am drawn to editor-turned-directors because they obsess over the cut, and his films carry exactly that disciplined, almost surgical sense of pacing.
