Mainoumi Shuhei

Mainoumi is my favorite kind of athlete: the one who arguably should not have been there at all. Born in Aomori in 1968 and standing around 170 centimeters, he entered a sport where opponents often weighed close to twice what he did, and still climbed to komusubi. Fans called him a department store of techniques, and the nickname is precise. He could not win by pushing, so he won by angles, timing, leg trips and the occasional piece of mischief. Watching him was watching intelligence applied under physical threat. He retired long ago, but to anyone who followed 1990s sumo he is still the small man who made giants look slow.
