My Take
Honestly, I find something quietly likeable about Makoto Oniki. He's a Fukuoka guy through and through, born in 1972, raised in the city and schooled at Kyushu University, and there's something grounding about a politician who came up in a place and then stuck around to work for it. He doesn't read like the flashy, soundbite-chasing type, and I kind of respect that. He has served six terms in the House of Representatives and was State Minister of Defense, and he reads as the sort of person who builds slowly and shows up rather than performing. Maybe I'm projecting, but I find myself rooting for the unshowy local fixers, and he gives off exactly that vibe.
