My Take
Neuer is, to my mind, the rare athlete who changed the grammar of his position. Before him, a goalkeeper wandering thirty meters off his line looked reckless; after him, the sweeper-keeper became standard curriculum. I admire how undramatic his genius is. His best work is positional, preventive, almost invisible, which is exactly why highlight reels undersell him. Captaining Bayern Munich while collecting back-to-back IFFHS world's best goalkeeper honors would define most careers; for him it feels like a footnote to a larger tactical legacy. Every modern keeper who plays comfortably with their feet owes this man from Gelsenkirchen a quiet debt.
