My Take

Marc Bolan was the glittering wizard who kicked the door open for glam rock, and I find his legend irresistible. A working-class boy from Stoke Newington who draped himself in feathers and lamé and made the whole world shimmer with T. Rex, he distilled rock and roll into something gorgeously theatrical and instantly danceable. His death at 29 in a car crash was cruelly premature, yet punk, post-punk and Britpop all walked the trail he blazed. The brightest flames burn shortest, and that cliché fits him perfectly. I still can't hear Get It On without wanting to move.
