Margo Martindale is my favorite kind of actor: the one whose face you know long before her name. Texas-raised and Michigan-trained, she spent decades as a reliable supporting presence before her Mags Bennett on Justified finally won her an Emmy, well past sixty. That late arrival is exactly what I find moving. It rewards the unglamorous craft of the character actor, the person who walks on and quietly commandeers the room. Her Claudia on The Americans only deepened the case. She doesn't perform charisma so much as embody weight and lived-in truth, and that, to me, is the harder, rarer skill.
