Marika Itō

Marika Ito interests me because of the swerve. A first-generation member of Nogizaka46, she stepped off the idol track and came back as an actress and an illustrator, someone who makes things rather than someone who is simply looked at. Born in Osaka in 1996 and raised in Kanagawa, she led Eyes in 2015 and then It's a Summer Film in 2021, playing a high schooler who has bet everything on getting a movie made, and she played the awkwardness as honestly as the passion. Even in supporting turns in Asahinagu and Kakegurui she pulls the eye. I suspect that is the illustrator in her: people who build things with their own hands rarely let anyone else's ruler decide what they are worth. I have no idea what she does next, and I mean that as a compliment.
